Walking Club
The Walking Club was created and implemented as a way for students to have an outlet for excessive energy prior to learning first thing in the morning. Upbeat music is played, using a variety of rhythms and beats to walk, skip, dance or sidestep too, going with the speed of the beat. The music will be paused, at which time the students “freeze” to complete a balance or coordination exercise/pose, generally crossing midline or alternating opposite sides of the body. These movements can have positive effects on learning. Crossing the midline, or reaching across the body's imaginary vertical line, is crucial for development because it enhances brain connectivity, coordination, and various skills. It strengthens communication between the left and right brain hemispheres, leading to improved cognitive functions like problem-solving, reading, writing, and math skills. Additionally, it's essential for developing bilateral coordination, allowing both sides of the body to work together efficiently.
Walking clubs can have many benefits for students, including:
- Physical activity: A fun way to help students get the exercise they need. Regular physical activity can help students succeed in school and in life.
- Social-emotional learning: Walking can support social-emotional learning. It can help students meet new people, build friendships, and provide a sense of community.
- Creativity and problem-solving: Studies have shown that walking can increase creative thinking and lead to better problem-solving abilities.
- Mental health: It can help reduce depression, anxiety, and stress, and improve self-esteem, mood and sense of well-being.
- Academic performance: It can help improve academic performance and readiness to learn. It can help improve concentration and make students feel more awake, focused, and cheerful.
