Happy Chinese New Year!
On February 16th, we celebrated the Chinese New Year, the beginning of the Year of the Dog. The children made paper Chinese dragons and practiced learning how to eat with chopsticks, first with popcorn, then with fried rice.
Merritt brought in a Chinese dragon that he made with his family, and we had a short dragon parade, followed by fortune cookies.
On the last day of school in 2017, after having our Christmas party on Thursday, we spent Friday morning celebrating Hanukkah. The children learned about the menorah and the oil, and Judah Maccabee, we made and ate latkes, and they sang the dreidel song and played Dreidel.
We read a story called The Patchwork Quilt about a girl, Tanya, who quilts with her grandma, and they make a quilt of family memories. We had a guest, my mother, who is a quilter. She brought a bunch in to show the children how they're made, and to illustrate some memory-making.
In reading, we read a story called "Moses Goes to a Concert", in which a deaf boy (Moses) attends a school for the deaf. His teacher takes the class to a concert where they "listen" to the music through vibrations in balloons and through the floor and socks with their shoes off. We went up to the high school and sat in on a middle school band rehearsal on the stage with balloons and with our shoes off and IT WORKED!
Christmas Preparations!
We had a visitor in our class- a walking stick (stick bug)!
